POINTS TO CONSIDER

Air Conditioning Refrigerants 101:

Prior to January 1, 2010, two types of refrigerant were widely used in air conditioning and heat pump systems: R22 and R410A. Rules enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) effective January 1, 2010 called for the phase out of ozone-depleting chemicals, including R22 refrigerant. The EPA rule changes may impact your decision to repair or replace your heating and air conditioning system. While the rule changes prohibited the manufacture of air conditioning and heat pump products containing R22 refrigerant they allowed the manufacture and sale of R22 components, including outdoor air conditioning and heat pump units, that are not charged with R22 refrigerant. The uncharged R22 components are to be used solely for replacement purposes with previously installed R22 heating and cooling systems. The uncharged R22 unit is often referred to as a "dry ship" unit and will require a charge of R22 refrigerant at the time of installation.

A Trane matched system with R410A refrigerant is the preferred quality
and comfort system.

  • Trane matched systems provide industry leading efficiency, reliability and comfort.
  • Trane offers industry leading consumer financing and low monthly payment options to make system ownership a more compelling option than to repair.
  • R410A systems represent a majority of all new heating and cooling systems sold and meet all of the current government requirements.

A Trane Dry Ship R22 model is preferred to a repair of your existing air conditioner or heat pump.

  • A Trane Dry Ship R22 air conditioner or heat pump offers increased efficiency levels over a compressor change-out on an older existing system.
  • Trane Dry Ship R22 units offer a 5 year registered limited warranty on compressor, coil and parts plus known Trane reliability.

Repairing your existing air conditioner/heat pump outdoor unit has many unknown outcomes:

  • The warranty period may have expired on the existing unit and future repairs could result in additional expenses.
  • If the existing air conditioner or heat pump is an older model, the efficiency and reliability of the repair is unknown vs. a Trane R410A system or a Trane Dry Ship R22 unit replacement.
  • The older your total system is, the greater the opportunity for energy savings by upgrading to a new higher efficiency Trane air conditioner/heat pump.
